- My story:
- At 7am, on the 11th of March 2004, on a clear autumn day, my father was involved in a head-on collision on a suburban road. He was taken to hospital and kept alive for 11 days until we turned off the life support.
I think we were lucky he didn’t die at the scene. At least going to the hospital gave us something to do, while we slowly came to terms with what was unfolding in front of us.
His sudden and violent death was the biggest thing that had ever happened to me and my family. We experienced loss and suffering that we had never experienced before.
For two and a half years we had very little information about the crash and why the other driver drove over the median strip and into his lane of traffic.
I struggled with the impersonal nature of the legal system. I couldn’t stand it. I wanted to change it, I needed it to be something different.
To this day it still surprises me that Dad is gone. Our lives are different now, he is not a part of it.
I want this community to be a household name. Unless you have experienced this, people don’t really get it. If we put a face to the statistics then maybe people will think that responsible driving is up to them.
